Arguably the best stand up comedian of all time. His timing was as brilliant as his choice of subject matter. His ability to find the very real absurdity in our thinking and way of life and then deliver it to his audience in a perfectly timed and executed package was unrivaled. Championed as a clean comic his work made us all feel that we were some how unified by our common experience. The strict purpose of the balance of this article is to pay tribute to his great body of comedic work.
He covered every topic and in that sense was a true renaissance man. From jokes about being a young man to a husband and father he made hundreds of millions of people laugh over and over again even at his reruns. A champion comedian whose reruns like Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm still make people laugh to this day. He must have spent his life constantly searching for the funny in things and finding a gold mine each time.
Albums, Television, Film and most importantly his work is a stand up comedian should stand the test of time.
I was always fascinated by him as a stand up comic that he was able to sit down on a chair and hold the complete attention of thousands of people in the audience.
He had brilliant animated facial expressions in sync perfectly with the timing and delivery of every line.
I had the privlege of seeing him live twice in my life and both times I laughed so hard that I couldn’t breathe and it hurt. There is a lot of talk about what the live performance does versus a recording. What’s fascinating about the live performance especially in the theatre setting is that the performer has your complete attention as Bill had so you are completely immersed. You don’t have the clamoring of drinks and waitresses around you in comedy clubs which is fantastic as well. I feel so lucky I was able to see him perform with my undivided attention. I love comedy clubs.
I always marveled at his sweaters. I used to wear sweaters like him. He made sweaters cool for a very long time.
