Den Of Thieves 1 & 2

A word on my film reviews. Unlike my fellow film reviewers I write my critiques of film with one fantasy in mind – that I had the opportunity to say something to the director on the cutting room floor of what the final composition was going to be. I love all actors and all actresses with even strokes but reserve the right to sing their praises to my hearts content. Please see this movie then after come and read my comments as if we were friends who went to the movie together and are chatting about it after over pints.

A fantastic modern action movie.

Big nicks wife is one of the most beautiful actresses in the world right now and I was devastated she was not in the first movie more or the sequel at all. A missed opportunity there.

I would have gotten rid of the whole big nick getting divorced bits. Although it made him seem more on edge it wasn’t very convincing or necessary and kind of took away from the action awesomeness apart from his wife being gorgeous. It was almost like they were trying to do to much. He would have been much or as much believable as a hard nose cop without the divorce cut scenes.

The best plot element of this movie was the band of cops that don’t have to answer to anyone to get the job done. Although highly improbable in real life the fantasy that their could be heroes out there who do what needs to be done was inspiring.

The oddest part of this movie was the scene where big nick sleeps with the criminal they are pursuing’s stripper girlfriend. This was oddly shot, oddly put together with odd ramifications on the plot. I mean it was necessary to establish the wrong robbery site but its hard to believe main criminal would have had the advance thinking to think that the cop would sleep with his stripper girlfriend and divulge the details as he got home. Now if you can believe all that its a real stretch that the criminal walked in on big nick leaving after having done this. If I kept this in I would have got rid of him walking on big nick leaving the apartment without confrontation.

There are some amazing action sequences in these movies.

The other interesting plot element on this series is the triple double cross.

In the sequel its to unbelievable that big nick would go villain and then turn back again to a cop then claim he was just acting. I wanted him to turn. He lost everything. I felt like they jammed this in and wish they hadn’t and interestingly enough it didn’t add as much as it took away from it. I would have left it as an unknown. I would have had him arrested by the french officer he met with the croissants sequence and then not made it obvious whether he was being set free or not.

The mob diamond heist return bit was also unnecessary. Although it does setup the stage for the third film but in the film itself it was just another distraction from the main heist. Oh and then the ambiguity about who was released from jail after was odd. In the most loving way possible I wish this movie had less odd moments and more awesome ones and it turns back on itself to often and to fast and on to many of the sub plot lines. I greatly respect the ambition.
